BROAD SHOULDERS RESPONSIBILTY FOR SAM
SAM CURRAN has revealed how Stuart Broad went the extra mile to help him thrive in Sri Lanka despite the all-rounder ending his 10-year reign as England’s opening bowler.
It would be understandable if Broad (right) was upset at having been dropped for the first Test. But far from sulking, he has been the ideal team man in trying to ensure Curran’s first senior tour is a successful one, and the pair could yet join forces for the second Test in Kandy.
“This is my first England tour to the subcontinent and it is very different,” said Curran, following a two-minute Remembrance Day silence at the team hotel to coincide with 11am in the UK.
“So keeping someone like Broady out of the side – I don’t know if it is me who is keeping him out – but conditions are very different and we went in with three spinners. Even though Broady didn’t play, he was always coming out and giving me a few tips.”
This is the kind of environment skipper Joe Root is trying to foster, where the emphasis is more on squad goals than team or individual victories.
Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya has been reported for a suspect bowling action.
