Three generations of McHughs who served with pride

-

A FAMILY have served more than 149 years in the armed forces – and been awarded 39 medals – between them.

Terence McHugh, 85, fought in Korea and Malaysia as a Sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals. He served from 1951 until 1971.

His twins Terence (Jnr) and Michael, both 62, along with their brother Stephen, 60, were all Sergeant Majors in the Special Air Service.

Terence’s youngest son, Kevin, 56, was a warrant officer for 24 years in the Royal Corps of Signals. Stephen’s son, Stephen (Jnr), 40, has done more than two decades in the Navy.

Michael’s sons, Christopher, 34, and Gareth, 32, have served in the Royal Corps of Signals.

The McHughs, from Liverpool, attended the Remembrance Sunday service all together for the first time.

Terence said: “The children live across the country so it has never been possible, but we have planned it to happen this year.”

The grandad-of-10, who has laid a wreath at the cenotaph for 15 years on behalf of the Soldiers, Sailors and Armed Forces Association, said the reunion was a very proud moment.

Terence said: “I see one of my children around every two months, but to see them together on Remembrance Sunday was special – especially 100 years since the end of the First World War.”
