Voice of HAL dies aged 90

THE star who voiced homicidal computer HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey has died aged 90.

Shakespear­ean actor Douglas Rain was from Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada, and trained at the Old Vic in London.

He co-founded theatre firm The Stratford Festival in 1953. Artistic director Antoni Cimolino said: “Canadian theatre has lost one of its greatest talents.”

Rain died in hospital outside Stratford, Ontario.
