American civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King at Newcastle University where he was awarded an honorary degree as a Doctor of Civil Law by the university’s chancellor, the Duke of Northumber­land. Before the ceremony, Dr King met a group of student leaders for an hour of talks about the racial prejudice faced by African Americans. Five months later he was assassinat­ed at a motel in Memphis.
