Feeble PM is trapped
AS the real Brexit negotiations begin enfeebled Theresa May is trapped in a pincer movement, fighting her ministers and Tory MPs on two fronts.
The expensive £39billion divorce deal and outline trade concessions she has had to make are opposed by those Conservatives who think it would be worse than remaining in the European Union. But others believe the weak Prime Minister is not going far enough.
Then there is the views of Northern Ireland’s assertive DUP to consider. She needs them if she is to win a “meaningful vote” in Parliament.
Tortuous talks with 27 European countries might be the easy part with more ministerial resignations possible and MPs in rebellious mood. When Margaret Thatcher called her Cabinet ministers into Downing Street one by one in 1990 and it didn’t end well for her.
