Mirror photo legend dead at age of 84
LEGENDARY Daily Mirror photographer George Phillips has died, aged 84.
He worked for the newspaper for several decades and covered major stories including the Hungerford massacre, the Fred and Rose West trial and the Jeremy Thorpe scandal.
An image he shot as a teenager at the scene of the 1952 Harrow and Wealdstone train crash won a Britannica news picture of the year award.
Reporter Syd Young, who worked with George in the West Country, said: “George was a wonderful, talented colleague who made me look better than I really was.”
George is survived by wife Pat, sons Martin and Tom and daughters SaraJayne and Hannah.
