Scandal-hit force’s officer claims it ‘held evidence of wrongdoing’
A POLICEMAN was arrested on suspicion of stealing a safe from a scandal-hit force’s HQ.
It was allegedly taken from a property store in Middlesbrough, having been put there for safety after a row over its contents.
The officer is believed to have claimed he got permission from a superior to secure the Police Federation safe because he suspected it held evidence of wrongdoing.
Sources said this is denied. The arrested officer has been released and suspended by Cleveland Police while inquiries continue.
Possible criminality by Cleveland officers in accessing phone records of journalists and whistleblowers is being examined by Operation Forbes. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it is not investigating the theft allegation – being probed locally.
It added: “We are not looking to take possession of the safe. We’re assured that if it holds anything relevant to our investigations, including Operation Forbes, we’ll be informed and have access to it.” PROBE The force’s HQ
