Today’s picture shows firefighte­rs battling a blaze at the Queen’s Hotel in Hereford Street, Coventry, after a German bombing raid which wiped out two-thirds of the city’s buildings. Starting at 7.20pm, wave after wave of Luftwaffe bombers pounded the city, destroying its historic cathedral and killing 568 people, with thousands more left homeless.
