STATES PRAISE ROONEY

- BY JOHN CROSS

USA boss David Sarachan says England should be “applauded” for honouring Wayne Rooney and insists it does not devalue the Wembley friendly.

Sarachan also claimed that Rooney (above) has made an “impressive impact” on the MLS since joining DC United.

Former LA Galaxy coach Sarachan (below) said: “I have thought about it because I know it has caused controversy.

“To have a chance to reward Wayne Rooney – as a federation – for a terrific international career, I kind of applaud that.

“I don’t think it devalues the game, I’d think differently if Wayne had retired from football three years ago, but he is coming off the back of a very impactful season in the US.

“He is fit, I’m sure he will not be out of place, he is in good form.

“Having Wayne in our league this year was a big bonus for many people who follow football. Having him in this game will see it followed a bit closer.”
