FULHAM TURN TO RANIERI AFTER SNUB FROM WENGER

ARSENE WENGER turned down a sensationa­l return to management with Fulham before Claudio Ranieri was appointed yesterday. As predicted by Mirror Sport, the Premier League strugglers axed Slavisa Jokanovic after he lost the confidence of the Craven Cottage board. Fulham sounded out former Arsenal boss Wenger (left), with the promise of substantia­l funds to strengthen HARRY KANE led a players’ delegation to make sure Wayne Rooney was given the No.10 shirt for his Wembley farewell.

That prompted Gareth Southgate into a U-turn which will allow Rooney to have his favourite number, a guard of honour before kick-off and take the captain’s armband when he comes on as a substitute against the USA tonight.

But Southgate said Rooney was “not particular­ly keen” to take a penalty if England get one while he is on the pitch.

“Harry came to see me and said, ‘Look, we don’t think it would be right for him to come on wearing a shirt he hasn’t worn previously’,” the Three Lions boss explained.
