Asda kicks off supermarket fuel war with 3p cut to 119.7p

- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

ASDA ramped up pump wars yesterday with a 3p-a-litre cut to make their fuel the cheapest at 119.7 for unleaded and 131.7p for diesel.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons were quick to follow suit but the Sainsbury’s drop does not kick in until tomorrow.

It comes two weeks after supermarkets knocked 2p off a litre of unleaded but the RAC said the latest cuts should have been at least 5p. Spokesman Simon Williams said: “While this is welcome, it has been an extremely long time coming. The cost of petrol on the wholesale market has dropped like a stone.”

He said retailers were “banking £2.75 every time drivers fill up” and reaping the biggest profit margins on fuel in four years.

But he praised supermarkets for forcing other forecourt owners to cut their prices. PUMPED UP Petrol prices
