A HIGH street in Wales that transformed its fortunes by thinking local has been crowned best in Britain.

Crickhowell, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, was overall winner of the Great British High Street Awards, in London yesterday.

And town bookshop owner Emma CorfieldWalters was named a High Street Hero, a category backed by the Daily Mirror.

Judge Hemlata Narasimhan of sponsors Visa said: “Crickhowell is a fantastic example of a community that has made huge strides, significantly improving the high street for locals and visitors alike.”

The town’s Totally Locally campaign has united 100 shops and firms to promote one another and provide vital community services. Dean Christy, of Crickhowell Corn Exchange, said: “We are absolutely thrilled.”

As shops battle online competition and soaring costs, the awards celebrate towns that buck the trend, as highlighted in the Mirror’s High Street Fightback campaign.

It was hailed as “brilliant” by High Street Minister Jake Berry who also backed our Have a Happy High Street Christmas.

He said: “Christmas is about coming together with families and communities and I fully endorse the Mirror’s call.” Daily Mirror backed High Street Hero
