STEVE McCLAREN was expecting his future as England manager to be decided on Saturday night – at the same time as TV’s X Factor was being aired.

The underpressure boss had been left dangling after receiving no assurances about his prospects from FA chief executive Brian Barwick.

McClaren was sacked after England failed to qualify for the European Championship.
