SPREAD over no matter how long and in return for whatever sort of consultanc­y, awarding a £5million farewell bonus to Richard Scudamore remains a scandalous decision by the Premier League clubs.

Forget the explanatio­ns and justificat­ions, it is absolutely prepostero­us. But is it any more prepostero­us than the amount of money clubs spend on agents’ fees?

In the summer transfer window of 2017 and the January window of 2018, Premier League clubs spent £211m on agents’ fees.

Yes, the indignant response to the jackpot for the Premier League’s outgoing executive chairman is spoton. But over the three years that Scudamore trousers his windfall, top-flight clubs will probably pay the best part of £700m to agents. Now THAT is what you call obscene.

Considerin­g it is a while since an England team under Jones has been utterly ’ruthless’, it is somewhat bizarre.
