Food obsession leaves bad taste

-

I briefly switched over from BBC1 on Sunday, just before 11am, to see how the other channels were covering the Armistice commemoration.

On ITV there was Gino’s Italian Escape, BBC2 had Saturday Kitchen Best Bites and Channel 4 was showing Sunday Brunch.

So, even when the nation was readying itself for a two-minute silence, its serenity was interrupted by the sound of people chomping and slurping and going “yum, yum, that’s so-ooooo incredible”.

This country is obsessed with food to an unhealthy degree. TV studios have become a big blender where producers just churn out one caloriestuffed show after another, meaning when we’re not getting obese consuming food, we’re gawping at other people cooking and scoffing it.

I spent the silence thinking about all those poor Tommies who died in the trenches to build a land unfit for trousers.

For your tempura they gave their today.
