Two years ago Sarah’s builder dad showed her a run-down space behind some shops and buildings.

She was told she could use it for the community or he would build on it – so she created the kind of community space the city lacked.

Penny Square, a paved area that was later covered, has hosted events including markets, live music and workshops and she put in three shipping containers filled by start-up businesses. The space is now used nearly every day.

And Sarah, 31, says while bringing the community together it has also helped tackle issues like loneliness and a lack of things for young people to do.
