‘Horrible nightmare’ as I found body of polar hero Capt Scott

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

THE journals of the explorer who found the frozen bodies of Capt Robert Scott and his team after their doomed South Pole expedition have emerged.

In them, Tryggve Gran tells of the “horrible nightmare he will never forget” when he discovered the tent in which Scott died along with Edward Wilson and Henry Bowers.

The British team made the Pole DOOMED Explorer Robert Scott in 1912 only to discover Norwegian Roald Amundsen had beaten them by 34 days. The five-man party, which also included Lawrence Oates and Edgar Evans, all died on the return leg. Norwegian Gran, a member of Scott’s shore party, was a Norwegian football international who later became the first pilot to cross the North Sea. He died in 1980 aged 91.

His diaries go on sale at Christie’s in London on December 12.
