Leader Matt is slow but sure

- CLOSE CALL BY NEIL McLEMAN

TOMMY FLEETWOOD took a five-shot lead over Francesco Molinari in their battle for the Race to Dubai.

But Matt Wallace raced out in front at the DP World Tour Championship the day after getting fined for slow play in his first round.

Fleetwood needs to win the event and see his Ryder Cup partner Molinari finish outside the top five to retain the title of European No.1.

And as Open champion Molinari stumbled home with three bogeys to card a 73 and slip to tied-27th, Fleetwood climbed up to tied-sixth after a 67. The world No.10 said: “It’s still a very difficult task to win the Race to Dubai, it’s not like I’m a prolific winner this year. “

Fleetwood is three shots behind Wallace, who is in pursuit of his fourth European Tour title of the season.

The Londoner was fined £3,000 for delaying over a par putt on the ninth hole in his first-round 68 but responded with a bogey-free 65 yesterday to move to 11 under par.

“I’ve never been done before so I wouldn’t say I’m slow, but it is what it is,” said the world No.57.
