SOUTHGATE’S TERROR OF THE ERRORS

- BY JOHN CROSS

GARETH SOUTHGATE has warned there can be no excuses if England mess up against Croatia.

Southgate hammered home the message to his players that he was unhappy with large parts of their performance against the USA at Wembley on Thursday.

And he told them they will suffer more heartbreak if they make the same errors tomorrow. The Three Lions stars had a debrief following the 3-0 win over the Americans.

Southgate is getting tough and making it clear that tomorrow represents a big opportunity – and they must not blow their chance.

He saw Croatia shatter their World Cup dream in the summer and the men from Zagreb also stopped England reaching Euro 2008 by winning at Wembley.

Southgate (right) plans to make wholesale changes to bring back the big guns for their final Nations League group game... with a very clear message they will lose if mistakes against the USA are repeated.

He said: “We have got to make sure we are spot on in the way that we play. I like the way we are playing with the ball. We are looking a real threat.

“This Nations League has built to a really exciting finish.

“Croatia have always had players of the highest quality.

“And as a new country with what they’ve been through, a mentality and resilience that is absolute top.”
