WELSH STRENGTH IN DEPTH GIVES GATLAND A HEADACHE AHEAD OF BOKS

- BY ALEX BYWATER NO STOPPING HIM

WARREN GATLAND hailed the strongest squad he’s had in 10 years as Wales boss – and then admitted he has no idea who to pick to face South Africa.

Gatland made 14 changes to face Tonga and saw his second string hammer the Pacific Islanders in a 10-try rout.

It means Wales

– who also beat the Scots and Australia this month – will go for a first autumn clean sweep when they take on the Springboks on Saturday. But Gatland (below) is scratching his head on team selection and said: “Yes, absolutely this is the most competitive squad we’ve had. We’ve always spoken about creating depth. As a coaching set-up we’ve said that when we leave, we want to leave the squad in the best possible position.

“I think going forward, Welsh rugby is in a good place and it’s nice to have those headaches. The hardest thing for me about selection is the players who miss out.

“I know how disappointed they are and I expect that as they should back themselves to be in the team. There are definitely going to be disappointed players.”
