Shame on you, Gauke

-

THE decision to keep black cab rapist John Worboys in prison where he belongs raises serious questions for Justice Secretary David Gauke.

His initial refusal to intervene when the Parole Board decided to let Worboys go was contemptible inaction.

Without the High Court action initiated by Worboys’ victims and the pressure of a judicial review launched by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, this animal might already be free.

The outcry forced a change at the top of the Parole Board and made the Ministry of Justice start doing its job, which is to fight for the rights of victims, not criminals.

Keeping Worboys in prison is a victory for justice, not political pressure.

But women who have been the victims of sexual assault or rape must never again need to fight to overturn dreadful decisions which should never have been made in the first place.
