A MAN was caught with wild birds stacked up in cages after trapping them in his garden.

Julius Gadzor, 39, used the sticky substance bird lime to snare them and posted images of the birds in captivity on social media.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds got a tip-off and he admitted catching the birds in his garden.

The information was passed on to police and the RSPCA, which gathered enough evidence to secure a search warrant at Gadzor’s home in Gravesend, Kent. Gadzor faced Medway magistrates and admitted possessing wild birds, items used for trapping birds and using bird lime.

He was given a 28-day curfew order and must stay at home between 7pm and 7am. He was also ordered to pay £300 in costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Sergeant Darren Walshaw said: “Bird trapping is not only illegal, it is incredibly cruel.

“We are committed to working with our partner agencies to put these criminals before the court.”

The RSPCA added: “To take a wild bird from its natural habitat and shut it inside a tiny cage is so cruel. They suffer greatly in captivity, are not used to being in cages and, sadly, often die.

“All wild birds in England and Wales, their nests and their eggs are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

“Actions may only be taken under specific licences. It is illegal to trap wild birds.”
