On this day

51 YEARS AGO (1967) Our front page reported on Labour PM Harold Wilson devaluing the pound to tackle the “root” of economic problems, and making cuts to public spending. 73 YEARS AGO (1945) Twenty Nazi leaders went on trial in Nuremberg on such charges as crimes against humanity. British judge Norman Birkett called it “the greatest trial in history”.

43 YEARS AGO (1975) General Franco, Spain’s dictator for 39 years, died at 82. It led to a new era of democracy. He was buried at the mausoleum built on his orders by civil war prisoners.

Today’s giggle

I slept like a log last night – but then I woke up in the fireplace.
