Clever cars have fuelled a £6.4billion payout in insurance claims this year.
The Association of British Insurers, says “ever more sophisticated vehicle technology” drove a 5% rise in repair bills alone to £3bn.
Examples include sensors in bumpers and windscreens which bumped up accident claims.
New tech has also contributed to theft soaring 32% on last year, to £271million.
The rise comes in part from a surge in keyless vehicle crime, where crooks can use gadgets to break into vehicles fitted with the latest entry devices.
Huw Evans, ABI director general, said: “Despite rising claim costs, all drivers will appreciate the fact that the average price paid for motor insurance has been falling this year.”
