PLANS John McDonnell LABOUR could try to take power without going to the polls if the PM’s Brexit deal is rejected by MPs.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said if she cannot summon a Commons majority, his party may try to form a minority government.

He said: “If the deal does go down, I think Theresa May will most likely take some time to go back to Brussels.

“At that stage we will be saying, give us the opportunity. You’re a minority party, [let us] see if we can form a minority government but with a majority position in Parliament.” THERESA May last night failed to agree the last details of her Brexit deal after EU leaders said any such further delay might lead to Sunday’s crucial summit being cancelled.

The Prime Minister flew to Brussels in a frantic bid to hammer out the final text at a 90-minute meeting with EU President Jean-Claude Juncker.

They insisted progress was made but Mrs May added she will travel back to Brussels on Saturday for more talks in the hope of getting the job done.

The PM said: “We have given sufficient direction to our negotiators, I hope, for them to be able to resolve the remaining issues. And that work will start immediately.

“I now plan to return for further meetings, including with President Juncker on Saturday to discuss how we can bring to a conclusion this process.”

It came after Germany’s ambassador warned that Chancellor Angela Merkel could pull out of Sunday’s summit if the final document was not published by this morning at the latest.

Tory MPs have demanded changes to Mrs May’s draft agreement, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called it “dead”, and the DUP, which props up the Government, has also condemned it. Chancellor Philip Hammond has said if the final EU deal is not approved by Parliament “we will have a politically chaotic situation”. Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd said if it does not get through the Commons “Brexiteers may lose their Brexit”. She added MPs would block a no-deal Brexit. Angela Merkel
