Mummified baby in dead mum’s house
A MAN and his two sisters clearing their dead mother’s home found the mummified remains of a brother they never knew existed.
The full-term baby was in a box in an under-stairs cupboard at the home of Carol Thompson.
The boy was hers and ex-husband Melvin’s but he told police he could not account for a pregnancy and had not seen the box.
He and Carol married in 1968, lived in Northallerton, North Yorks, and divorced in 1996. Carol died in January this year.
An inquest in the town heard yesterday that letters in the box dated from 1968. The three other siblings were born later.
The coroner said: “It is utterly tragic your mother had to carry a secret like that.” Verdict: Open.
