First victory in foie gras fight
Wonderful to see the first victory in the campaign to make Britain foie gras free.
The pate is made in France and other European countries by forcefeeding geese and ducks, a process so cruel that it’s illegal in the UK.
European Union rules allowing free movement of goods mean we cannot ban its import.
Last week, I reported on a campaign by Downton Abbey actor Peter Egan and Animal Equality to boycott the foul stuff.
It was launched outside Tate Modern in London, which had included foie gras on its Christmas menus.
However, this week the gallery announced a U-turn.
“We are delighted that Tate Modern has taken the compassionate decision to drop foie gras from its festive menu,” said Animal Equality director Dr Toni Shephard.
“With less than 10% of Brits eating foie gras, and 79% supporting an import ban, it was completely inappropriate for a publicly-funded institution to be serving this extremely cruel product.”
