Campaign finance officials could not trace the origin of payments worth £128,000 to Macron’s En Marche party in 2017.

Individual donations are limited to £6,600 in France, so if Mr Macron exceeded this he could face court.

A source for Paris-based prosecutor­s said: “An inquiry has been launched in liaison with financial investigat­ors.”
