If you’ve graduated and fallen head first into adult life – don’t panic. We’ve teamed up with Fish4Jobs to bring you 10 tips for landing your first role.
1. Clean up your social media Employers will check profiles. Embarrassing photos, quips and too much personal life detail can damage your chances of success.
2. Optimise your CV
Build it around your degree and any work experience. Boost it with holiday jobs, internships and extra-curricular achievements such as running a society or being captain of a sports team.
3. Apply your uni experience How can the skills you’ve developed be transferred to employment? Think teamwork, deadlines, research etc.
4. Write a great cover letter
It helps you stand out. Emphasise experience and achievements. Don’t repeat your CV.
5. Network
Talk to family, friends and classmates to find out who knows anyone in your chosen field.
6. Tailor applications
Make your CV fit what you’re applying for. Demonstrate a passion for the role.
7. Consider alternatives
Look at apprenticeships or work placements. They could be stepping stones.
8. Research
Your CV will state university helped you develop excellent research skills. So prepare fully for that interview.
9. Set targets
When you’ve applied for 46 jobs, had three interviews and only heard back from one, it’s difficult to stay motivated. Apply for a set number of targeted jobs daily and keep going.
