England fired up for Aussies as coach reveals he was once spat on by Wales fan

JOHN MITCHELL says England are the rugby nation everybody loves to hate – and they must use it to their advantage.

Eddie Jones’ right-hand man was in uncompromising mood ahead of Saturday’s Twickenham showdown with Australia.

The Aussies are rank outsiders after losing seven times in 2018. They last beat England in 2015 and key-man David Pocock is struggling to be fit. But they have been fired up by a battle cry from Wallaby legend David Campese (above), who told Mirror Sport: “This is a huge game for us because we are playing England, who are the enemy.

“In history it’s always been that way. This is one of the biggest stages you’ll ever play on. A full Twickenham, a lot of history there. I just hope the players can go out and show they have that will to win.” England fatally misjudged the power of the past last season when Ben Te’o claimed Calcutta

Cup history was “completely irrelevant”, only for unfancied Scotland to rise up and slay the Auld Enemy.

Mitchell (below) is determined there should be no repeat and has urged his players to understand the mentality of the opposition. “I don’t think too many people like us as England, do they?” he said. “You just have to look at the satisfaction and the gloating when we don’t get it right.

“It’s important to understand that and to realise we can actually reverse that in terms of our own thinking and in the way we go about things.

“I still think there’s a place for you to realise how much it means and the fact you hate coming second to somebody that you dislike. “Ultimately, you’ve got to put that into that context, you’ve got to channel it in the right way. We live in a highperformance world, talking about process not necessarily about emotional hooks that can provide you with motivation around the context of the game. “But, yeah, I still think it’s relevant.” Mitchell recalls his first spell on the Red
