AN elephant-size ancestor of mammals lived at the same time as dinosaurs, scientists have found.

Fossils of a nine-ton dicynodont, a plant-eating reptile with mammalian traits, show it lived over 200million years ago.

Lisowicia bojani, found in Poland, dispels the idea dinosaurs were the Triassic period’s only big animals.

The Polish Academy of Sciences’ Dr Tomasz Sulej said: “It raises questions about what makes them and dinosaurs so large.”
