& HIS HONOURS
Out Of Their Skin is on ITV4 at 10pm on Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov 27/28)
ASHLEY COLE has revealed he regrets quitting England too soon.
The LA Galaxy left-back retired from international football on 107 caps in 2014 after being axed for that year’s World Cup by thenboss Roy Hodgson. His last game was against Denmark (left).
In a new ITV documentary, Out Of Their Skin, Cole told how the World Cup in Russia rekindled his love for the Three Lions. He said: “Number one has to be playing for your country. I watched the World Cup and I miss wearing that shirt. I shouldn’t have retired from England. I needed to respect the shirt.”
Cole, England’s first black centurion, was overlooked in favour of a teenage Luke Shaw. He is understood to have decided against going on a standby list, feeling that at 33 and having lifted a string of trophies he had nothing more to prove. Cole added: “I gave up a bit. I was still good enough.” Arsenal .............. 156 Crystal Palace (loan) ..... 14 Chelsea .................. 229 Roma .......................... 11 LA Galaxy ...................... 86 INTERNATIONAL CAREER 1999 England U20 ...................... 2 0 2002 England U21 ...................... 5 1 2001-14 England .................... 107 0 Premier League: 2001–02, 2003–04 FA Cup: 2001–02, 2002–03, 2004–05 FA Community Shield: 2002, 2004
