Hope rising for jailed ‘spy’ Matt
HOPES are growing that British academic Matthew Hedges could soon be free after his wife made a plea for clemency to the United Arab Emirates.
The Durham PhD student, 31, was jailed for life in Abu Dhabi this week for spying – a charge he denies.
Yesterday the UAE ambassador in London said he hoped for an “amicable solution” despite the fact judges had seen “compelling evidence”.
Daniela Tejada said her husband was “absolutely terrified” at the idea of life in jail. She added: “We have asked for clemency. We will see what happens.”
The Foreign Office said it “hopes the UAE looks favourably on the request”.
