The Bill was voted through unopposed, meaning a change to presumed consent could get royal assent in the New Year.

Labour peer Lord Hunt, who introduced the Bill, said it could move consent rates in England from 65% to 80%, and lead to 700 more transplants a year. He said: “It’s time to make a change.”

Tory Health Minister Lord O’Shaughnessy said it could “make organ donation a part of our culture”.

Labour’s Lord Elder, who told peers of his own heart transplant, said the new law would make “transplantation more accepted”. Baroness Thornton praised the Mirror’s “tireless campaign”.
