44 YEARS AGO (1974) The 3.2 million-year-old partial skeleton of “Lucy” a female hominin – an ape with some human characteri­stics – was discovered in Ethiopia.

My battery had an alkaline problem, so it went to AA meetings. Comedian Billy Connolly is 76. He started out as a folk singer. Knocked Up actress Katherine Heigl is 40. She has two adopted daughters. Singer Russell Watson is 52. He is known as “the People’s tenor”. Extras star Stephen Merchant is 44. He has won three Baftas. And many happy returns to Mirror readers George Ribchester, of Todmorden, West Yorks, 85, and Claire Meldrum, of Brandon, Co Durham, 40.
