UKIP signs up EDL thug as ‘advisor’
Even ex-leader Farage is appalled
UKIP are adopting ex-EDL chief Tommy Robinson as an adviser in a move even party founder Nigel Farage found extreme.
UKIP boss Gerard Batten said Robinson would help turn them into “a party for ordinary people”.
He said: “I think he is very courageous. He stands up for victims of industrialised sexual abuse.”
Robinson will be unpaid and advise on “the rape gangs phenomenon” and jail reform.
But former UKIP leader Mr Farage said he was “appalled”, adding: “Gerard Batten has got this sort of fixation with Tommy Robinson and discussing Islam, and dragging UKIP into effectively being a sort of street activist party.” He said he would call for a UKIP vote of no confidence to “get rid of ” Mr Batten. Labour’s David Lammy said: “Now UKIP has been exposed for what it is: a far-right rabble of dangerous nationalists.” Robinson’s contempt of court case for filming defendants at a grooming trial has been referred to the Attorney General.
