Corbyn backs call to ban trophy hunting souvenirs

-

JEREMY Corbyn is among senior politicians backing a ban on importing trophy hunting souvenirs into Britain.

The Labour leader joined calls for an end to imports after it emerged nearly two tons of elephant ivory has been shipped into the UK in the past decade. Hunters have exploited a legal loophole to bring back 729 elephant tusks and other body parts.

According to the UN, hunters also carried souvenirs hacked off dead hippos, bears, leopards and lions. Mr Corbyn said: “I’m totally opposed to trophy hunting and to the importing of animals killed for trophy hunting. We have to protect animals that are facing extinction.”

A motion calling for an urgent ban on trophy imports has now won the support of all the main parties.
