SUNDERLAND has been named as the best place to live for the under 30s.

Leeds, Aberdeen and Liverpool were also in the top five.

Milton Keynes was the only place in the South to make the top 10.

Places such as London and Brighton were hit by the high cost of living.

The Liveability Index ranks all Britain’s towns and cities with more than 200,000 residents.

The ratings – by financial services provider OneFamily – are based on incomes, cost of living and how people feel about their area. Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, of OneFamily, said: “Green spaces and living near family are important, but it’s worth considering the cost of living.”

In Sunderland a three-bedroom, semi-detached home, with garden and garage, costs £150,000-£180,000.

The North East city on the mouth of the River Wear has Nissan, the biggest car plant in the country, on its doorstep.

A £117million bridge, the Northern Spire, opened in August.

And plans for a manufacturing plant could lead to 7,000 new jobs. Northern Spire
