The former Tory PM is on a list of candidates submitted to the Bank of England for a new polymer note, marking the UK’s contributi­on to science. The Baroness trained as a research chemist.

Others include Prof Stephen Hawking, Enigma-cracker Alan Turing, nutritioni­st Magnus Pyke and maths’ Ada Lovelace. The choice must “inspire, not divide”. GMB general secretary Tim Roache said: “On what planet was Margaret Thatcher a figure who sowed unity?”
