Hunger is not a game

-

WHEN increasing numbers of desperate Britons are forced to rely on foodbanks, it’s no wonder Welfare Secretary Amber Rudd’s boast that she sleeps “like a baby” jars with victims of Tory austerity.

Rudd sounds heartless when benefit penalties and cuts imposed by her department keep punished families awake at night.

A UN expert was right to condemn her Government’s imposition of the unjustifiably cruel Universal Credit regime as a “punitive, mean-spirited and often callous approach”.

Rudd’s heroine might be a character in The Hunger Games, but we’re worried about all the people going hungry because of the Tories.

We applaud the generosity of donors and the volunteers who run foodbanks, but deplore the hardship endured by so many.

Rudd should shake off her complacency and start repairing the holes punched by her party in the welfare state.
