Sir Bobby originally won Sports Personality of the
Year in 1966 after the 4-2 final victory over West Germany at Wembley.
Now he’s been named
“best ever” in a poll to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the BBC awards.
The West Ham legend’s daughter, Roberta, said: “It makes me incredibly proud to think that after all this time he is held in such high esteem.” She added that Bobby, who died of cancer in 1993 at 51, would have been very proud. She said in the Radio Times: “It really is very touching and huge comfort to all our family. The original trophy was in pride of place.” Sir Andy Murray, the only one to lift the trophy on three occasions, was runner-up.
Lewis Hamilton, who won in 2014, came third. Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan willl host the 65th awards on December 16.
