Good to see bike thugs taking a fall

- Edited by

■ I read your article about the Met Police stepping up the war against moped thugs with interest (Mirror, November 24).

Towns and cities up and down the country have been blighted by a wave of violent crime while the Government has made swingeing cuts to the number of police on the streets.

This has led to the public feeling unsafe and unprotected against these so-called marauding gangs who think they can rob and stab with impunity. It is therefore heartening to read that the Met Police Force is having some success with “tactical contact” by using specially trained drivers to knock the criminals off their mopeds.

Now let’s see sentences to match the crimes.

John Parry, Salford, Gtr Manchester

■ I was delighted to read the news that police are using “tactical contact” to knock thug drivers off their mopeds. They are an absolute menace in our towns and cities and for too long have caused mayhem on our streets thinking they were safe if they drove into narrow alleys or places where police cars couldn’t follow.

It is drastic but sensible policing. In America these thugs would probably be shot, so they should consider themselves lucky to get away with bruises and sprains.

Janet Cooper, Liverpool

■ It was a breath of fresh air to read about police drivers using their cars to knock thieving moped thugs off their bikes as the Met steps up its war on these criminals escaping justice.

No doubt the do-gooders and the parents of these scum will shout foul play. Unfortunately, it will be only a matter of time until someone will be seriously injured and a cry will go out for a police officer to be prosecuted, but I say long may it continue. Ron Wilson, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

■Bravo to Metropolitan Police Commander Amanda Pearson. I think it is absolutely fantastic that the police are knocking thugs off their mopeds with their cars. Commander Pearson deserves a pat on the back for coming up with this idea which should have started ages ago. Wendy Harbinson, Telford, Shrops

■ I completely agree with the Met Police Force’s tactics of knocking thieves off their mopeds. I would also like to see stop and search used more effectively to cut knife crime. If a person is caught carrying a knife they should be sent straight to jail for a year, no questions asked.

Ian Lindsey, Sutton, Gtr London

■ I, for one, say well done to the police and keep up the good work. This method of “tactical contact” needs to be used as often as possible to teach these selfish lowlives a lesson they will remember. It needs to be followed up with punishment suitable for their offences, rather than the present slap on the wrist.

James McWilliams, Tyne & Wear

■ It is about time drastic action was taken against these motorbike thugs. It has gone on long enough and so what if they are injured or worse after being knocked off the stolen bike by the police vehicle?

Annie Nash, Cardiff
