Jones job safe till World Cup

- BY ALEX SPINK

EDDIE JONES has been told his job as England boss is safe through to the World Cup.

Jones was given the official thumbs-up on the day Andy Farrell, the man he sacked as defence coach when he took over, was appointed Ireland’s next head coach.

Farrell’s promotion follows Joe Schmidt’s decision to quit following next year’s World Cup in order to “prioritise family commitments”.

Jones (above) has paid for his decision to get shot of Farrell pretty much ever since he made the fateful call. Ireland denied England a Grand Slam in 2016 and won one against them at Twickenham the next season. And they are shorter odds than Jones’ team for the World Cup.

Now, at least, the Australian is assured he will go to Japan.

Back in June, after losing six games out of seven, Jones was told by the Rugby Football Union he did not have “unconditional” support.

But yesterday RFU chairman Andy Cosslett said: “That discussion – if it was there recently – has evaporated now.”
