Nailing lies on austerity

- BY KEIR MUDIE

TOMORROW the Mirror helps launch a nationwide campaign to show the truth behind the Government’s claim “austerity has ended”.

With the People’s Assembly Against Austerity, we will tour the country including the worst-hit areas to uncover the reality of what eight years of Tory cuts have done.

Tomorrow’s London launch kicks off the Britain is Broken campaign.

Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon said: “I hope to see as many Mirror readers as possible at the launch of this important campaign.

“Austerity has wreaked havoc on working-class communities … It has to stop. With a Labour government led by

Jeremy Corbyn it will.”

After taking into account inflation, pay has fallen by 6% since the end of 2007 – the longest decline in real wages since the Victorian era, from the 1860s to 1870s.

A&E waiting times were the worst last winter, with more than 85% of patients waiting more than four hours in January. And Homelessness has soared to 320,000.

Figures released by the Trussell Trust show the use of foodbanks has tripled to more than 484,000.

The Mirror and People’s Assembly will work to unearth more facts about the toll of austerity.

The launch, featuring politicians, trade union bosses and campaigners, starts at 7pm tomorrow at the London Irish Centre, Camden Square, NW1 9XB.

The event will also be live streamed on Facebook.
