Right-to-die case appeal turned down
BATTLING Noel Conway A TERMINALLY ill man claims he will have to turn off his ventilator and suffocate to death after the Supreme Court refused his right-to-die appeal.
Noel Conway, 68, who has motor neurone disease, wants to die in “peace and dignity”.
But the UK’s highest court yesterday halted his lengthy legal battle, saying he had little hope of success with his appeal.
He argued the ban on assisted suicide was incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights and his right to a private life.
The retired lecturer from Shrewsbury, Shrops, said it was “downright cruel” to deny the terminally ill the right to die peacefully.
Assisted suicide can bring a 14-year sentence.
