I am a trained beauty therapist and thinking of turning a spare room at home into a treatment room. I have home insurance and am wondering if I need to take out additional business insurance or if there is anything else I need to consider? Shelly, by email

Your home insurance will not cover you for running a commercial business. If you don’t have the right business cover it could even invalidate your home insurance and life insurance too. Ask your insurer what extra cover you may need. You need to think about public liability cover. While not a legal requirement, it is essential for your type of business as you’ll have customers on your premises. And you may need to let your mortgage lender know you are operating a business from your home.
