A tearful Margaret Thatcher leaves Downing Street for the last time, accompanied by husband Denis. The Iron Lady resigned after failing to gain enough votes in the first round of the Tory Party leadership contest launched by Michael Heseltine. She had initially vowed to fight on, but was persuaded to step down by her Cabinet. She reportedly regarded her forced exit as a betrayal.
