SUPERMARKET customers are being urged to help the needy at Christmas by giving to foodbanks.

Tesco shoppers can give to the Trussell Trust foodbank network and the FareShare food distribution charity at 2,600 of the chain’s stores until Saturday.

The Trussell Trust is braced to give away 1.5 million meals in December.

Chief Emma Revie said: “This year is set to be the busiest-ever Christmas for foodbanks in our network.”

More than a quarter of the food it gave out last year was donated by Tesco customers. Volunteers at the charity’s network of more than 420 centres hope the supermarket’s annual collection will boost stockpiles.

Demand has already soared by 13% this year, with experts blaming the Universal Credit roll-out.

Food donated to FareShare goes to groups which provide for the likes of pensioners and people in homeless shelters. Its chief, Lindsay Boswell, said: “For charities doing their best to feed the vulnerable over Christmas, these donations make a huge difference.”

Tesco, where shoppers donated more than 3.34 million meals last year, vowed to top up the value of food donated over the next three days by 20%.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s shoppers will find labels on shelves from tomorrow showing items useful to foodbanks. Tell us what you think: yourvoice@mirror.co.uk
