Winks good for the nod by England

- BY DARREN LEWIS @MirrorDarren

ANOTHER Champions League game, another 90 minutes of Harry Winks running the show.

Another of those problems for England boss Gareth Southgate that managers love to have.

And another one of their own for Spurs fans to cherish as he matures on the European stage.

Had Winks (right) not seen last season cut short by injury back in February he would have surely featured in the World Cup semi-final against Croatia five months ago.

Had he played in that match then England would surely have kept the ball better instead of allowing the Croatians to escape to victory from a goal down.

Now Southgate surely has to find a way to factor into his strongest side the 22-year-old from Hemel Hempstead who is proving his quality.

So far this season Winks has enjoyed a late cameo in England’s historic 3-2 Nations League win over Spain and a start in the 3-0 win over the USA. He is surely now set to become an England mainstay, just as he is for Tottenham.

Here against Inter there was so very nearly bite to his bark as he curled a sumptuous, 35-yard strike against the bar. Sometimes it isn’t just enough for the boy wonder to pick the opposition apart with his precision passing.

Regardless of the calibre of the sides he is up against, Winks is ready. Here at Wembley when the chips were down he once again showed he is very able.
