Watchdog to probe ‘unjustified’ 66% jump in key funeral costs
A CONSUMER watchdog has launched an investigation into soaring funeral costs.
Prices have shot up 66% in the past 10 years, three times the rate of inflation. A funeral now costs those on the lowest incomes almost 40% of annual outgoings – more than they spend on food, clothing and energy combined. The Competition and Markets Authority said it had “serious” concerns and the rises did not appear to be justified by cost increases or improvements.
Families spend, an average £3,000 to £5,000 on a service. Cremation costs have risen 84% to an average £737.
The CMA’s Andrea Coscelli said: “People in mourning are extremely vulnerable. We need to make sure they are protected and we’re very concerned about substantial increases.”
Ian Strang, of comparison site Beyond, said: “The funeral sector has become like the Wild West.”
MP Frank Field said: “People are being ripped off. I’m glad the CMA is taking a look at this.” CONCERN Funeral costs
